High school football rankings: Bishop Gorman holds at No. 2 in MaxPreps Top 25 ahead of showdown with No. 6 Miami Central. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) improved to 2-0 after rolling past Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) 60-15 in Oregon on Friday at the Nike Kickoff Football Classic. The Gaels, No. 2 in the MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings, have posted 122 points in their first two games and face a huge test Friday hosting No. 6 Central (Miami). This is the season opener for the Rockets.
No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) earned an early statement win 20-7 over St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) in Florida. It was the 16th consecutive out-of-state win for the Braves as senior Caleb Sanchez threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns.
No. 4 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) won its second straight against a nationally ranked opponent, beating St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia) 17-14 in a nationally televised game on Saturday. Five-star defensive lineman David Stone committed to Oklahoma during halftime and dominated in the victory.
No. 7 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Fla.) handed St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) its second consecutive loss to begin the season. The Lions trailed 14-7 at the half before outscoring the Panthers 28-0 in the second half of the 35-14 win. North Carolina-bound running back Davion Gause rushed for 182 yards and two scores for Chaminade-Madonna while the loss dropped the 0-2 Panthers eight spots to No. 20.
St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) had one of the most impressive wins of the week against Good Counsel (Olney, Md.). The back-to-back defending Division 1 state champs outscored the Falcons 21-0 in the second half to grab the 28-7 victory. Senior quarterback Casey Bullock accounted for two touchdowns as the win moved the Eagles up three spots to No. 11.
American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) moved up three spots to No. 17 in the MaxPreps Top 25 after a dominant 45-20 win over St. John’s (Washington, D.C.). Sophomore quarterback Dia Bell threw for two touchdowns in his first varsity start. The son of former 12-year NBA veteran Raja Bell has already landed offers from Florida, Miami, Penn State and a handful of others.
Walton (Marietta, Ga.) was one of two new teams to join the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings, checking in at No. 21. The Raiders beat Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) 49-27 to open the season and answered that with a 63-15 win over Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.) on Friday.
Mission Viejo (Calif.) also enters the rankings as the 23rd-ranked Diablos are now the fourth team from California in the MaxPreps Top 25. They’ve outscored their first two opponents 76-27.
